The former Donna Jean Schulz was born June 14, 1950, at Watertown, Wis., the daughter of Alvin and Evelyn (Haerterich) Schulz. She grew up in Lake Mills, Wis., and graduated from high school at Lake Mills Public School in 1968. Donna then attended Westmar College in Le Mars, where she graduated in 1972 with a degree in elementary education.
Her first marriage was to Albert Schulz, during which they adopted two children. Later on Aug. 28, 1998, she was united in marriage to Michael Hemmelman at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Donna had been employed for more than 15 years with Hy-Vee Food Stores in Le Mars. Prior to her employment with Hy-Vee, she had been employed with the Le Mars Daily Sentinel.
On July 20, 2003, Donna Hemmelman rededicated and renewed her life to God, in which afterwards she was an active member of Le Mars Assembly of God Church, where she was involved as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Wasmer Post 241 and was also the secretary/treasurer of the Plymouth County American Legion Auxiliary.
Donna had a passion spending much of her time lovingly making arts and crafts as gifts for her family and friends. She loved her cats, tending to her garden, watching cooking and home shows, and doing home improvements. Hailing from Wisconsin, she was a true "cheesehead" and avidly watched her Packers. Brett Favre was her favorite player to watch. Her compassionate love for people, especially children, along with her free-spirit made an impact on so many. Donna's love for children was so great and what gave her the most joy and happiness in her life was being a mother and grandmother. She was a loyal, faithful and loving wife to her husband. Many gifts given from her, many gifts received by so many from her - truly a gift from God.
Survivors include her husband, Mike Hemmelman of rural Le Mars; a son, Patrick Schulz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Shallynn Schulz of Cherokee, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Danielle Hemmelman of Norfolk, Neb.; two grandchildren, Jaydon Lane and Khloe Mann; her mother, Evelyn Williams of Lake Mills, Wis.; two sisters, Cathie Donaldson and her husband, Gary of Appleton, Wis., and Barbara Hansen and her husband, Pastor Art Hansen of Burnsville, Minn.; three brothers, Gary Schulz and his wife, Lania of Chetek, Wis., Rich Schulz and his wife, Joan of Middleton, Wis., and George Schulz and his wife, Cathy of Lake Mills; and her very close meaningful friends, Pat Denny, Chareen Valentine, Angie Conyers, Shawnda Rutledge and Clarice Henrich.
