AKRON, Iowa | Dorothy Finzen, 84, of Akron passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron. The Rev. Jim Berka will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery at Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are with Carlsen Funeral Home–Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Dorothy Ann was born June 3, 1931, on a farm near Akron, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mina (Hillrichs) Peters. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. She attended school in Akron and graduated valedictorian of the class of 1950.

She was united in marriage to Arvin Finzen on Aug. 6, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Dorothy worked for First National Bank in Akron for eight years. For over 40 years, she worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Finzen Oil Company.

Dorothy was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was active in W.E.L.C.A., YoMaCo's, and was a Luther League counselor. She was also a member of the Book and Thimble Club for many years, was county chairman of the Federated Women's Club, and served on the Akron Hospital Auxiliary Board. She and Arvin were active in the Sioux City Gospel Mission. She also held offices with the Western Camp of the Gideon's International Auxiliary in Orange City, Iowa. She was also a Campfire Girls leader. Through the years, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling, and baking. But most of all, she loved the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of over 65 years, Arvin of Akron; a son, Todd Finzen (special friend, Renae Miner) of Akron; a daughter, Tami (Bruce) Small of Akron; five grandchildren, Amy Small of Akron, Krista (James) Vander Helm of Akron, Thad (Trisha) Finzen of Ireton, Iowa, Keri Finzen (fiancé, Kaylan Kluender) of Akron, and Garrett Finzen (special friend, Drew Kueck) of Akron; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Darrell Peters (special friend, Lois Berner) of Akron; sisters-in-law, Arlys Peters of Hawarden, Iowa, and Beth Finzen of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harvey Peters; and a sister-in-law: Mary Peters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Dorothy's name to the "Noisy Offering" in care of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron.
