Maxene Wessels, 88, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at her home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2014 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars with Reverend Tim Geitz officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation with the family present to greet friends after 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Thursday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Friday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Arrangements are with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Maxene Lillian Johnson was born April 26, 1926 in Hawarden, Iowa to Fred and Delphia (Goodrich) Johnson. Maxene was raised in the "frog pond" area of Hawarden. She was baptized and confirmed while living in Hawarden. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1944. Maxene was united in marriage to Armin Wessels on September 12, 1948 in Ireton, Iowa. Max and Armin made their home in Le Mars. Max and Armin were blessed with 4 children: Linda, Kris, Vikki, and Denise. She was a stay-at-home-mother to her children and day care provider to many children through the years to include her grandchildren. Max was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle, American Legion Auxiliary, Care Review Committee at Brentwood, and a PEER Helper. Max enjoyed traveling and loved to visit with family and friends.

Survivors include her four children: a daughter, Linda Lehrman and her husband Jim of Le Mars and their family Michelle Lehrman and Karen (Kyle) Huinker, a daughter Kris Harvey and her husband Ron of New Braunfels, Texas and their children Brenda (Damon) LaCour, Brian (Amber) Harvey, and Beckie (Troy) Lamp, a daughter Vikki Masuen of Le Mars and her children Brad (Denni) Masuen and Matt (Jade) Masuen, and a daughter Denise (Curt) Uden of Le Mars and their children Kate Shade, Nikki (Chris) Feller, Jeremy (Crystal) Uden, and Jamie (Troy) Anderson; 27 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Delphia (Goodrich) Johnson; her husband Armin on June 24, 1983; a son-in-law, Mark Masuen; a great grandson Noah (Lehrman) Jenness; her siblings: Clarence "Dub" Johnson, Ruby Strong, Helen Metzger, Vidy Andriesen, and Richard Johnson.
