Norman "Norm" Lang, 75, long time Le Mars educator, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the Le Mars Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at St. John''s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars with Reverend Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 will follow at the Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitations will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Pallbearers will be Brad London, Jeff Statema, Todd Lang, Troy Ahlrich, Andru Athens, Bryce Weinreich, and Shay London.

Norman Darrell Lang was born July 27, 1933 at Le Mars, Iowa to Clarence and Margret (Schwiesow) Lang. Norm was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John''s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He received his education in the Le Mars schools and graduated from Central High School in 1952. Following high school, Norm went to work as a tractor mechanic at Becker Implement in Le Mars. He entered the United States Army in 1955. He served in Korea from 1956-1957 with the 19th Ordinance Company as a track mechanic and on the Inspector General Team. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Le Mars and attended Westmar College where he earned a degree in Industrial Education in 1960. On August 14, 1960, Norm was united in marriage to Shirley Ahrendt at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. Norman worked as a carpenter in Le Mars before joining the staff at Central High School working with the Trades and Industries Classes. In 1966, Norm received his Masters Degree in Education from Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Co. In 1966, Norm became the Director of Trades and Industries Department. He continued in the position until his retirement in 1995. Norm loved his job as a T and I teacher. He has had the opportunity to influence and mentor hundreds of students through the years. With many of these students, they considered him a friend. These relationships continued outside of the class room and remain intact today. During his retirement years, Norm enjoyed substituting at the schools. Norm was a member of St. John''s Lutheran Church, where he had taught Sunday School and had served on numerous boards and committee''s throughout the years. He was also a longtime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241, Le Mars Rotary Club and the American and Iowa Vocational Associations. For the past several years, Norm was very proud and honored to serve as a Trustee with Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Shirley of Le Mars; 3 daughters, Darci Athens of Le Mars and her sons Andru and Bryce, Gina Statema and her husband Jeff and their daughter Allegra of Le Mars, and Erin London and her husband Brad and their children Shay, Emily, and Cale of Waukee, Iowa; 2 brothers, Estill Lang and his wife Shirley and Robert Lang and his wife Ramona all of Le Mars; 2 sisters, Gloria Burkard and her husband Chris of Kerrville, Texas and Debbie Schroeder and her husband Loren of Colorado Springs, CO, and several nieces and nephews.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Margret (Schwiesow) Lang.
