Evelyn Ludwigs, 92, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Reverend Greg Gabriel officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service Monday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Shannon Roepke, Shane Roepke, Samuel Roepke, Skip Roepke, Thomas Carlson, Adam Carlson, Daniel Carlson, Matthew Carlson, Troy Connelly, and Timothy Connelly.
Evelyn G. Bonnema was born June 21, 1920 on the family farm in Preston Township, rural Le Mars, Iowa to Harry and Dora (Mohlman) Bonnema. Evelyn was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Preston Township and confirmed at St. John''s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She attended country school near her home on the farm and when the family moved to Le Mars she continued her schooling in town. Evelyn was united in marriage to Hilbert Ludwigs on May 10, 1942 at St. John''s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Evelyn was proud to be a stay at home mom to raise her children. For a number of years she provided child care services in her home. Evelyn was a longtime member of St. John''s Lutheran Church where she enjoyed participating with the Dorcas Circle. For many years, she sewed baby gowns for the layettes distributed to missions. She will be remembered as a talented cook and gardener. She enjoyed baking her "famous" white hot milk cake and decorating many cakes for birthdays and anniversaries. Evelyn also enjoyed her garden and canning vegetables for family and friends. Evelyn also enjoyed sewing and quilting; having made quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her three daughters: Dianne Roepke and her husband Ed of Zimmerman, MN, Karen Connelly of League City, TX, and Kathy Carlson of Winona, MN; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Mary Bonnema of Chandler, AZ, Joan Bonnema of Orange City, IA, and Barbara Brown of Portland, OR; her in-laws, Gerd and Phyllis Ludwigs of Akron, and Irene Ludwigs of Le Mars; several nieces and nephews; and close friends, Cleo and Jake Ahrendsen and Betty and Ron Pedersen all of Le Mars.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Dora (Mohlman) Bonnema; her husband Hilbert on February 26, 2004; 5 brothers: Harry Jr. (Dollie) Bonnema, Orville Bonnema, Gerald (Louella) Bonnema, Marlyn Bonnema, and Franklin Bonnema; and a grandson David Carlson.
