LE MARS, Iowa - Della M. Dirks, 84, of Le Mars died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Merrill, Iowa, with the Rev. Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Dirkes was born March 15, 1913, in Grant Township, rural Plymouth County Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Clara (Kruse) Popken. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her education in a country school.

She married Henry Dirks on May 9, 1944, in San Rafael, Calif. The couple lived in California a brief time before returning to Iowa. They worked for Bertsel and Ethel Brown for over 30 years. The couple retired and moved to Le Mars in 1976.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was active with W.E.L.C.A. and the Country Gardeners Club.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Darwin and Julie Dirks of Le Mars; and four sisters, Clara Oetken, Hilda Renken, Helen Popken, and Amanda Haage, all of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Dora Westhoff, Alma Onken, Emma Westhoff, and Tina Popken in infancy; and a brother, Albert Popken.

Pallbearers will be Bill, Rodney, and Marlyn Renken, Gerald and Wilbur Westhoff, Alwayne, and Warren Oetken, and Jerome Haage.
