LE MARS, Iowa - Jerry Wyan DeBoer, 56, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his residence.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Revs. Gary Landsness and Timothy Hogan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. DeBoer was born April 29, 1942, in Baraboo, Wis., the son of Bernard and Dorothea (Zenk) DeBoer. He moved with his family to Le Mars, where he graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Navy stationed near San Diego, Calif., where he was an instructor for Flight Captain School. Following his discharge, he managed a donkey softball team for two years. He returned to Le Mars and worked in maintenance at Gehlen Catholic High School. He also served in the Iowa National Guard Co. A, 2nd Battalion (Mech) 133.

He married Sally Jo Averman on June 13, 1971, in Pender, Neb. He received his bachelor's degree in industrial arts and history in 1973, from Westmar College. He taught at Woodbury Central High School in Moville, Iowa, for four years. He then did contracting work building grain bins and pouring concrete. In 1987, he began teaching industrial arts at Remsen-St. Mary's School.

He did volunteer computer work for the priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing, softball and glass etching.

Survivors include his wife; his parents of Le Mars; two sisters and their husbands, Bernette and Dennis Clark of Garden City, Kan., and Donna and Steve Jester of Le Mars; a brother and his wife, Jim and Peggy of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bill and Ina Averman of Plymouth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Rev. Arnold and Eliza Zenk.
