Abby M. Penning, 31, of Lombard, Illinois, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa passed away unexpectedly, Friday, July 31, 2015 at her home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ with Reverend Jan Christensen officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Pallbearers will be Tyler Penning, Travis Penning, Jeremy Mulder, Josh Mulder, Corey DeJong, and Connor McMasters. Honorary casket bearers will be Nicole O''Tool, Virginia Arrigucci, Sophia Krueger, and Jeremy Simon.

Marie Penning was born May 27, 1984 at Winter Park, Florida to Cynthia (DeJong) and Lowell Penning. The family had lived in Florida, Rapid City, SD and Colorado Springs, CO before returning to Le Mars to make their home. Abby attended school in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 2002. She continued her education Iowa State College graduating with a degree in journalism and mass communications in 2006. Shortly after graduating, Abby accepted a position with Allured Publications in Chicago as an Associate Editor. With this position, Abby traveled to many countries around the world. In 2013, Abby accepted a position with Intertek working as a content strategist creating technical writings. Away from work, Abby enjoyed time with family and friends. She treasured the memories of the trips her mom and aunts would make to Chicago for a "girls weekend" of shopping and fun and with family at Lake Okoboji. In Chicago she enjoyed attending comedy festivals, game nights with friends, watching television to relax, and attending movies. Abby loved knowledge, always wanting to learn; she had a passion for reading books.

Survivors include her father, Lowell and step mother Pat Penning; a brother Ben Penning; paternal grandmother, Muriel (Lyle) Koehlmoos; several aunts and uncles: Perry (Kathy) DeJong, Dona (Bryan) McMasters, Amy (Joe) Lechtenberg, Vicky Mulder, Lon (Jeanine) Penning, Leon (Cary) Penning, Christy (Cris) Collins, Stacey (Mike) Hoffman; her step father, Brad Athens; a step brother, Andru Athens; step aunts and uncles: Arnold (Dolores) Thompson, Dianne (Roger) Beck, Randy Thompson, June (Melvin) Neddermeyer, Bruce Thompson, Brian (Katy) Athens, Eric (Julie) Athens, and Mike Athens; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother Cindy on December 19, 2014; maternal Grandparents, "Pitts" and Alma DeJong, and her paternal grandfather, Lloyd Penning.
