AKRON, Iowa - Robert E. Barr, 61, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, formerly of Akron, died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at the Veteran's Home in Oskaloosa following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Fred Penner officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Barr was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Akron, the son of Hayes H. and Goldie I. (Goodrich) Barr. He attended school in Akron, graduating from Akron High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts, as a youth, and attended a national jamboree in Valley Forge, Pa. He enjoyed music and played in a band. He played baseball for an Akron team, as a pitcher.
Survivors include his mother of Hawarden, Iowa; two sisters, Maurine and her husband, Elmer DeJager of Hawarden and Frances Newman of Joplin, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; a brother; and a sister.
