Lloyd Kallsen, 82, of Le Mars passed away Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at St. John''s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. Reverend Greg Gabriel will officiate. Burial with military rites conducted by Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2011, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time. Memorials may be directed to St. John''s Lutheran Church, Life Skills, and Le Mars Little League. Pallbearers will be Gary Kallsen, Dennis Kallsen, Mark Mayrose, Joey Kallsen, Nathan Hisel and Roger Mulligan.
Lloyd Louis Kallsen was born December 10, 1928 on the family farm in Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa to Arthur and Clara (Oloff) Kallsen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John''s Lutheran Church in Preston Township. He attended country school near his home and later graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1946. Following graduation from high school, Lloyd attended Western Union College in Le Mars studying math and science. Lloyd was a Navy Reservist and was called to active duty on November 27, 1950. Lloyd was united in marriage to Evelyn Downing on March 16, 1951 at the E.U.B. Church in Le Mars. He served his country until being honorable discharged on November 2, 1952.
While in the Navy, Lloyd became interested in his future career of engineering. Lloyd continued his education studying engineering and later earned his engineering certification and license. He started his career working for Plymouth County and then accepted a teaching position in Inwood, Iowa teaching math and science. He later accepted the position of Assistant County Engineer for Plymouth County for the next 14 years. In 1967, Lloyd became the Woodbury County Engineer for the next 27 years, retiring from a career he had a passion for in 1994. He always said he loved his job and looked forward to work the next morning. Lloyd enjoyed spending time and being involved with his children. He had coached Little League baseball with his sons, was the Cub Master of the local Boy Scout troop, and enjoyed attending his children''s school activities.
He and Evelyn were longtime members of St. John''s Lutheran Church in Le Mars; where Lloyd had served on Church Council for several years, ushered, and assisted wherever the need was. He had also served on the Board of Directors of Life Skills, the Le Mars Community Alumni Association and was involved with numerous professional associations throughout the years. Lloyd was also a longtime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post where he was instrumental in helping to establish the Korean War Last Man Club serving as its secretary for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Evelyn of Le Mars; 2 sons, Gary Kallsen of Ames, Iowa and Dennis Kallsen and his wife Cindy of Kankakee, Illinois; a daughter, Deb Mayrose and her husband Mark of Le Mars; 4 grandchildren: Joey, Libby, Christopher, and Nathan; in-laws: Dorothy Trobaugh of Le Mars, Virginia and John Brangwin of Le Mars, and Joyce and Stanley Nervig of Marcus, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Clara (Oloff) Kallsen; a brother, Eldon Kallsen; a sister, Edna Kallsen and a step-sister, Ruth Kirchoff.
