Funeral Monday for Irene Barthole

Irene M. Barthole, 84, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center, Remsen.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas J. Hart, Rev. Timothy Johnson and deacon Allan Weiler officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. The Fisch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barthole was born March 24, 1915, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Diekmann) Schultz. She was raised and educated in the Remsen area. She then did domestic work in the Remsen and Marcus area. During Warld War II she moved to Waterloo, Ia. where she worked in a factory until after the war. She then returned to Remsen where she was employed as a bartender at several businesses in Remsen until her marriage.

She married Jack Barthole on August 1, 1954, at Carroll, Ia. They made their home in Remsen where they operated Barthole's Corner Tavern until retiring in 1986. Jack died Feb. 6, 1990. Irene had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center since January 10, 2000.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, Ron of Remsen, two sisters, Emily Mae Ahlers of Laurens, Ia. and Mary Ann Hansen of remsen, two brothers and their wives, Richard and June Schiltz and Donald and Pat Schiltz of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Elmer Schultz, a sister, sally Delperdang; three brothers-in-law, Robert Delperdang, Leo Ahlers and Leonard Hansen, and a sister-in-law, Alma Schultz.

Casket Bearers were John Cook, Leon Fiedler, Joe Kane, Steve Matgen, Mike Ruden and Mike Tritz.
