August Earnest died at his home in Remsen Township Jan. 15 of quick consumption. He was born in the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany on the 19th day of Sept., 1848. On the 17th day of October, 1872 he married Miss Margaret Raber at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. where they resided for six years when they moved to a farm near Iowa City. In the spring of 1883 they came to Plymouth County and settled on the farm south of Remsen, the present family home. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Earnest, Fred G. Earnest of Alton, Mrs. Peter E. Galles (Catherine) near Remsen, Mrs. Victor Mechnig (Lena) of Windom, Minn., Mrs. George Kramer (Gussie) of Remsen, Miss Charlotte (Dot) L., and Charles of Remsen, John and Esther at home. – Liong family news clipping

Death of August Earnest.
August Earnest died at his home in Remsen township 20 minutes after 8 Monday evening January 15 of quick consumption.

Decedent was born in the kingdom of Hanover, Germany, on the 19th day of September 1848. On the 17th day of October 1872 he married Miss Margareth Raber at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where they resided for 6 years when they removed to a farm near Iowa City, Iowa. In the spring of 1883 they came to Plymouth county and settled on the farm south of Remsen, the present family home. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Earnest and they all live to mourn the too early demise of the kindest parent and husband. The children are Mr. F. G. Earnest of Alton, Mrs. Peter E. Galles, of near Remsen, Mrs. Victor Mechnig of Windom, Minn., Mrs. George Kramer of Remsen, Miss Charlotte L., and Mr. Charles of Remsen, John and Esther at home. The funeral cortege left the house of mourning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 and after the funeral rites were solemnized by the Rev. W. Vehe, at St. Paul church, the body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery in the presence of a large concourse of friends of the family.

Fred Earnest was called to Remsen the first of the week by the death of his father from lung trouble after an illness of over two months. Deceased was born in Schleswig Holstein Germany fifty-seven years ago and came to America at the age of six. In early manhood he was a railroad engineer and until 1884 lived at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was married at the age of twenty-five and twenty two years ago came to Remsen with his family.

There survive him a wife and eight children. The children are Fred of Alton, Mrs. Galles of Remsen, Mrs. Mechnig of Windom Minnesota, Mrs. Kramer of Remsen, Miss Dott and Charles and John and Esther at home. He also leaves a brother in Germany. Deceased was a fine man and leaves a host of friends.
