Roy Donald Zimmerman, 1916-1982

Roy Donald Zimmerman was born March 9, 1916, at Merrill, Iowa, the son of Walter G. and Anna Lydia Lippke Zimmerman. Roy grew up on the farm southeast of Merrill. He received his education at the Plymouth Township country school and the Merrill High School. Living four miles from Merrill, a special effort had to be put forth to be able to attain a high school education, due to his desire to play basketball and be on the team. Roy helped his parents with farm work. During the harvest season, Roy, along with other fellows of the community hired out to farmers in other communities.

On June 15, 1939, Roy was united in marriage to Wilma Ray Saunders at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The farming occupation carried them to many localities: Merrill, Iowa; LeMars, Iowa; Bigelow, Minn.; Sanborn, Iowa; Marcus and Sheldon, Iowa. Feeling the urge to a new occupation, they went into the Locker and Meat Cutting business at Lu Verne, Iowa; Annandale, Minn.; and Wayne, Nebr. Another change of occupation was necessary, this time taking them to Archer, Iowa, in 1968, where he was propane distributor at Sheldon and Sanborn, finishing his career as custodian at the Primghar School. He retired in 1981.

To this union four children were born: Deloit D. Zimmerman, Wayland Ray Zimmerman, Beth Marie (Mrs. Ron) Honkomp and Curtis Roy Zimmerman.

Roy passed away February 10, 1982, of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 13, 1982, at the United Methodist church of Archer, Iowa. Rev. Norris Hanson of Archer and Rev. J. J. Nanninga of Sheldon, officiated. Interment was at the Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn, Iowa. Mauer Funeral Home, LeMars, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.
