KENNETH WALTER ZIMMERMAN 1912-2000
Kenneth Walter Zimmerman was born October 30, 1912, at Merrill, Iowa, the son of Walter G. and Anna Lydia Lippke Zimmerman. Kenneth grew up on the farm in Plymouth Township and received his education at the Plymouth Township country school. Kenneth devoted his teenage years to helping his parents with the farm work. During these years improvements were made to the farm site, building a new barn, corn crib and house. During the depression years of the 1930’s, Kenneth hired out and worked as farm helpers to farmers in the Stanton Township community. He along with other young fellows from the community ventured out to South Dakota, Minnesota and Nebraska to work during the harvest season to gather in the crops for hire.
On November 27, 1936, Kenneth was united in marriage to Shirley Elizabeth Perkins at Pipestone, Minnesota. They farmed near Merrill, Iowa, for two or three years, then moved to Pipestone, Minn., and farmed. Later they moved to Wisconsin and farmed. After farming they moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he worked as an attendant in a Green House, developing a green thumb. The he went to custodial work in an insurance building. After retirement he took up furniture upholstering.
To this union were born two children: Arlan Lloyd Zimmerman and LeAnn Mae (Mrs. Tom) La Barre. Kenneth and Shirley devoted some of their retirement years helping out the “Go Ye Mission” in Oklahoma. While trying to get away from the cold northern weather, they wintered a few years at Wichita Falls, Texas.
Kenneth died July 8, 2000, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
