DEATH OF REMSEN PIONEERS. Remsen Bell Enterprise:
Remsen lost another one of her old and highly respected residents is the death of John H. Mehlhop, a pioneer farmer and business man of this section of the country, which occurred suddenly at an early hour on Sunday morning. His death was due to diabetes and other complications, with which he had been suffering for a long time.
John Mehlhop was a native of Germany, born in the Prussian province of Hanover, on February 19, 1847, a son of Johann and Margaretha Mehlhop. Upon completing his schooling in his native land, Mr. Mehlhop came to the United States. This was in 1865, when he was eighteen years old. He located in LaCrosse, Wis., where for five years he was engaged as a farm helper. He then went to Grant county, the same state, was married there to Anna Meyer, then a widow, and also worked at general labor for some time, coming with his wife to Plymouth county, Iowa, in 1882. He purchased a quarter section of land in Henry township, south of Remsen, and the family has ever since resided here.
Mr. Mehlhop, in his younger days, took an active part in politics and all other public affairs in the district in which he lived, and at the time of his death he was a director of the First National bank of Remsen, in which capacity he served steadily and earnestly ever since the bank was organized fifteen years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Mehlhop six children were born, of whom three are left to mourn his death. They are Henry, Carl and Ann, who is now Mrs. John Holler. The children all reside in Henry township.
The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon at one-thirty o’clock and was conducted by Rev. E. H. Eilers, of St. Paul’s church. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Feb. 1, 1918, page 2.
