TWO PIONEERS DEAD. NICHOLAS KOHLER SUCCUMBS TO INFIRMITIES OF AGE. LIVED MANY YEARS IN FREDONIA….Nicholas Kohler, one of the pioneers of Plymouth county, died at his home at 1305 Washington street, on Saturday night. His death was due to old age and failing powers. Last week his condition was realized to be very serious and the members of this family were called and were at his bedside when he passed away.
Nicholas Kohler was born at Berne, Switzerland, on November 21, 1833, where he grew to young manhood. In 1854 he located at Elgin, Iowa, in the month of April. He was united in marriage to Marie Lang on September 18, 1961. In 1879 they came to Plymouth county, settling in Fredonia township, and made their home there until four years ago, when they retired from the farm and came to Le Mars to live.
Mr. Kohler is survived by his wife and eight children, who were all at his bedside during his last illness. The children are: Alfred Kohler, of Flandreau, S. D.; Mrs. G. Zangger and Mrs. c. c. Baughman, of Larchwood, Iowa; Mrs. A. J. Stang and Pauline Kohler, of Le Mars; Henry and Joseph Kohler, of Fredonia township; and Mrs. H. P. Tonsfeldt, of Remsen.
The funeral services will be held at eleven o’clock this morning at the Evangelical church in Remsen, and interment will be made at that place.
Mr. Kohler was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a good citizen and held the respect of the community where he lived for so many years. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Jan. 14, 1913, page 1.
