Mrs. Chris Kallsen, one of the prominent and best known women of Remsen, died at her home suddenly Tuesday afternoon from heart trouble. Mrs. Kallsen was born December 26, 1857, in the village of Falle, near Hamburg, Germany. Her maiden name was Schoenning, in which family there were ten children and Mrs. Kallsen is the last of the family to pass away. She came to the United States with her mother and several brothers in 1875 and the family settled at Belle Plaine, Iowa. While a resident of that part of the state, she was united in marriage with Chris Kallsen at Dysart, Iowa. Two children were born to this union, one of them dying in infancy and the other being Miss Anna Kallsen, who was with her mother when the final summons came. She was a member of the Lutheran church all her life and always took an active part in all church activities. She was a charter member of the Ladies’ Aid of Christ Lutheran church and for ten years secretary of that organization. The funeral for Mrs. Kallsen took place Friday afternoon. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Oct. 23, 1928, page 2.
