Wesley W. McCorkell

Wesley M. McCorkell, 94, of Salem, S.D., died Friday, April 12, 1996. at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Salem.

Services were held Monday, April 15, 1996. at United Church of Canistota. Canistota, S.D., with the Rev. Roy Caudill officiating. Shelly McCorkell was the soloist. Arthur Cooper was the organist. Burial was In Riverside Cemetery, Akron.

Pallbearers were Marcia, Mike Kristie; Doug; and Troy McCorkell, Paula Dessner and Brad Hjellming.

Mr. McCorkell, was born January 30, 1902, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Howard and Estella (Tucker) McCorkell. He married Myrtle Adams January 3, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa. They fanned in the Akron area until 1951 when they moved to a farm near Canistota. They farmed in the Canistota area until 1979 when they retired and moved to Salem. While living in Salem he did chair caning and furniture repair and
refinishing.

Wes had spent the last three years at the Colonial Manor nursing home in Salem. He was a member of the United Church of Canistota, was a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Canistota, was a former rural school board member in Akron, was a 4-H leader, had worked at the Auction Warehouse in Sioux Falls, and worked for Greenland Township. McCook County checking gravel.

Survivors Include his wife; five children, Wayne and his wife Jan McCorkell of Lodi, CA, Eldon McCorkell of Lemon Grove, CA, Howard and his wife Carolrae McCorkell of Mitchell, Lois Hjellming and her husband Marlow of Bryon, MN, and Ray and wife Jan McCorkell of Salem; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and four sisters, Carol Siebens of Akron, Iowa. Dorothy Whitaker of Farris, Illinois, Jeanne Esterberg of Alexandria, MN. and Mrs. Melvin (Lois) Nielsen of Akron, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, Harold, four sisters, Esther Clarey. Alta Mentzer, Sibyl Whitaker. and Eva Davis, and two daughters-in-law. Kay and Anna Marie McCorkell.
