Samuel E. Moist Was Over Ninety Years Old

Samuel E. Moist, one of the oldest men in LeMars, died at his home, 1512 Howard street, on Monday night shortly before twelve o'clock. He was over ninety years of age. He had been sick for the past six years and lately was blind and helpless and the end came as a relief from long suffering.

Samuel E. Moist was born in Juniata county, Pennsylvania, on March 27, 1824, and was ninety-one years and six months old. He lived in his native county until he was twenty-five years of age and then moved to Stephenson county, Illinois, where he lived for thirty-two years. He came to Plymouth county thirty-four years ago and with his family settled on a farm four and a half miles northeast of Hinton. He and his wife, after living for two or three years on his farm, came to LeMars which was his home until his death. He was married fifty-six years ago in Illinois to Miss Louisa Phillips, who died eighteen years ago. Ten children were born to their union, four of whom preceded their father in death.

Those living are B. F. Moist and Miss Ada Moist, of this city, Sylvester Moist, of Fergus Falls, Minn., Mrs. Lizzie Root, Midland, S. D., Sam Moist, of Chicago, and Mrs. Leila Deane, of Canada. There are also a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two half brothers, Adam and Ephraim Moist, live at the old home in Pennsylvania.

The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon at the home, Rev. Jesse Ralston, of Sheldon, officiating, and interment was made in the city cemetery.

Mr. Moist was well known to many of the older residents of the county and but for many years lived the life of a recluse owing to sickness.
