Richard Winter

Richard Winter who lived in the Merrill-Melbourne community for the past several years, passed away in Le Mars on November 6, 1955. He had been hospitalized for 7 months.

Mr. Winter was born September 27, 1863, in Austria. He was 92 years, 1 month and 9 days of age. He came to the U. S. to the state of Missouri at the age of 9 years. A short time later he moved to Mills county in Iowa and in 1909 to Plymouth county. He had made his home with a daughter, Mrs. B. A. Bogenrief of Merrill, since 1939. Deceased was married to Caroline Schmidt on February 4, 1892. She passed away in 1938. They were married in Plymouth county near Merrill.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 1955, at 2:00 p. in. at the Merrill Melbourne Evangelical United Brethren church. Rev. Charles Henry, assisted by Rev. K. I. Clawson of Le Mars, will officiate and burial will be in the Le Mars city cemetery under direction of the Matter funeral home.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bogenrief and Mrs. Elmer Lentz, of Merrill; and a son, Leonard Winter of Merrill; 4 grandchildren. Caroline Laughton, Donald A. Bogenrief, James Bogenrief of Merrill and Maedean Gunn who lives in New Mexico. Also surviving are 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, 1 sister and 1 granddaughter, Janet Lentz.

Attend Lost Rites For Richard Winter

Casket bearers for the Richard Winter, 92, funeral were Wm. Spies, Dwight Spies, Raymond Swanson, Ray Berner, Niel Brink and Clifford Kress. Among those coming from a distance were his grandson Donald Bogenrief from Milford, Rev. and Mrs. Walter Winter of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gonnerman of Dysart, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Winters of Glenwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Will Krier of Hendrick , Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brandstetter of Wayne , Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Offerman and son of Marcus and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Stratton of Kingsley.

Richard Winter was born in Kleinmore, Austria, not in Australia as reported in the obituary.
