OLD RESDIENT DIES. Mrs. Griepenburg Was Well Known Woman of Remsen Vicinity.
Remsen Bell-Enterprise: The ranks of Remsen pioneer residents lost another member, and the community a beloved woman and much respected citizen yesterday, when Mrs. Ettje Griepenburg, 74 years old, and a resident here for thirty-seven years, died suddenly at her home.
Mrs. Griepenburg was the widow of a former prominent Remsen farmer and a native of Germany. Her maiden name was Ettje Mina Milfs, and she was born on June 25, 1855, in the village of Juebberde, near Remels, Ost Friesland, Germany. In her native home she was united in marriage to Follrich W. Griepenburg, also of the place. In 1882, and for a period of ten years the couple continued to farm there. In 1892 they came to the United States and direct to Remsen, and this has been the family home ever since. On their arrival Mr. and Mrs. Griepburg went to farming ten miles south of town, where they prospered and enjoyed life to the fullest.
In 1913 they sold out and the aged couple settled down to enjoy their remaining days in comfort.
Mr. Griepenburg passed away August 28, 1928, and since then the mother had been sharing the family home with her younger son, Follrich. Surviving re the following children: Mrs. Lena Lopau, Kingsley, and M. M. Griepenburg, Mrs. Mattie Kohnke and Follrich K. Griepenburg, all of Remsen.
The deceased was a member of St. Paul’s church.
Funeral services took place Saturday afternoon at the home at 1 o’clock and at St. Paul’s church at 1:30 o’clock. Services were conducted by the Rev. Henry Reif Schneider, former pastor of the church, now of Omaha. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Nov. 26, 1929, page 7.
