R. A. Smith, Akron Paper Founder, Dead

Raymond A. Smith, 95, founder and publisher of the Akron Register-Tribune for many years, died Saturday at the Akron Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Schroeder Funeral Chapel with Ralph Burdette officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Aug. 7, 1876, at Spirit Lake. He married Aura Phippin there. She died in 1960.

Mr. Smith founded the Register-Tribune and published and edited it for more than 70 years. It is now owned and operated by his son Gerald of Akron. Mr. Smith was active in local politics; at one time serving as mayor and town clerk. He was a former member of the Consistory and a member of Freedom Lodge 434 AF&AM, more than 50 years.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Smith of Akron; a granddaughter and two great-grandsons.
