Howard Nygard departed this life last Wednesday, June 9, 1971, along the highway south of Westfield, Iowa. His death occurred as the result of an automobile accident He was 67 years of age.
Howard Russell Nygard was born In Sioux Valley Township, Union County, South Dakota, July 16, 1903. His parents were Otto and Alma Nygard. On September 13, 1903, he was baptized at the Brule Creek Lutheran Church. As a young man he became an adult member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church through Confirmation and had been a member in good standing of this church ever since. On July 1, 1925, at a wedding in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha L. Sommervold. He resided in Akron for about 21 years, then moved to Hawarden where he had been a resident for the last 25 years. Mr. Nygard had been In the trucking business during most of his life and thus was well known in many areas through his., service to people. Howard was a friendly, good-natured person who seemed to radiate cheerfulness and geniality wherever he was.
Among those who survive his departure are: his wife, Mrs. Bertha Nygard of Hawarden; his daughter, Mrs. JoAnn Schipper of Ireton, Iowa; his son, Gerald Nygard of Hawarden his brother, Clifford Nygard of Akron; his four grandchildren and his many other relatives and friends.
The funeral service in his memory was held In Immanuel Lutheran Church, last Saturday forenoon, with Pastor David J. Roy, officiating. Carol Harris was soloist and was accompanied by Mrs. Henning Shoulberg, organist. Those who served as pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Nygard: Raymond Johnson, Richard Sommervold, James Sommervold, Gorman Nygard, Richard Nygard and Robert Hanson,
Interment was In Riverside Cemetery at Akron, under the direction of Schroeder Funeral Home.
