Elmer Louis Gerdes, age 53, of Akron died last Thursday, May 14, at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha after a two year illness. He had been in the hospital over a year.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Akron Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Harris Hostager officiating. Music was "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art", a duet by Mrs. Norman Nielsen and Mrs. Darwyn Klemme, accompanied by Mrs. Glen Gabel, organist. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery under the direction of the Schroeder Funeral Home. Military rites were held at the graveside by Hoschler Post, No. 186, American Legion. Pallbearers were: Ray A. Plueger, Lester Pleuger, Darrel Plueger, Richard Westergard, Leslie Klemme and Ray Plueger.
Mr. Gerdes was born July 16, 1916, in Plymouth County and lived near Akron most of his life where he had farmed-and worked in a hardware store. On October 31, 1941, he was married to Esther Langholdt. He was a World War II Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors are his wife, Esther, of Akron; his mother, Mrs. Anna Gerdes, of Le Mars; and two sisters, Mrs. Ray Lindgren, of Yankton, and Mrs. Gerald Featherston, of Kingsley.
