DEATH OF TWO PIONEERS. Both Had lived to Celebrate Golden Weddings. Remsen Bell Enterprise: Two well respected matrons from the rank and file of the oldest inhabitants of Remsen were lad to their last rest this week.
Sophia Margarethe Davids, nee Goos, died at 11 p.m. June 24. The decedant was born Sept. 21st , 1822 at Bussdorf, Province of Schleswig, Germany. On the 31st day of March, 1844, she became the wife of Fritz Davids, and to them three sons and three daughters were born. In 1886(?) Mr. and MRs. Davids came to America, following hither their youngest son, William, who had immigrated some time before, and the three made their home in Remsen. Of the five children who remained in the father land two sons and one daughter died, while two daughters live there. In 1894 Mr. and Mrs. Davids celebrated their golden wedding in Remsen and that event is not forgotten by our citizens. Mr. Davids died on the 5th day of February, 1905, and since his widow has made her home with her son William’s family. William died three years ago and the mother was laid to rest beside the husband and son in the Remsen cemetery on Tuesday, June 28th after the usual obsequies observed in St. Paul church. Rest in peace. -
Also – 50th Wedding Anniversary:
One of the liveliest times Remsen has known for some time came off on Saturday afternoon and evening at the celebration of the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Davids. Mr. Nic Fisch with his carriage escorted by the band took the couple to the German Lutheran church where a large crowd had gathered to see the wedding knot tied over again. After which the couple and guests were escorted to Eisner’s hall where large supplies of dainty eatables just fairly made the tables groan under their load. Now we never were very backward when it comes to a table like that so we just fell to eating, noticing that all others were doing the same. After supper the tables were removed to another room and dancing was in order. We are certain that most of our old couples felt twenty years younger before they had made three turns around the room. All in all it was one of the most enjoyable affairs of the season. We join in heartily wishing the couple continued health and happiness through life. – Le Mars Globe, April 4, 1894, page 4.
Also - Papa Fritz Davids celebrated his 80th birthday last Sunday. The Remsen band, in which Mr. Davids takes great interest and which assist at festivals and dances, serenaded the old gentleman. Mrs. Davids is now 78 years old, but she dished a neat lunch and some refreshments with the grace of a lady half her age. Mr. and Mrs. Davids celebrated their golden wedding last year. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, June 20, 1895, page 3.

Remsen Bell Enterprise. Sixty years ago, on Monday, March 14, 1844, it was, when Mr. and Mrs. Davids joined hands at the altar and became husband and wife, so that, according to the old rule of our country, they will celebrate their diamond wedding next Monday. The event, so seldom appearing, will be remembered by the old couple on Saturday next, when at three o’clock in the afternoon the Rev. Dettman will give them benediction at St. Paul’s church. The friends of the old couple are invited to attend and witness the ceremony. – Le Mars Globe-Post, March 23, 1904.

Mrs. Fred Davids, mother of the late William Davids, entered upon the ninetieth year of her life, Tuesday September 21. Mrs. Davids is undoubtedly the oldest person living in and around Remsen. She was able to receive her friends who came to the Davids home on her birthday and was a happy and gay as any of them. The old lady reads the paper daily and remembers dates and circumstances of events of years and years ago. Her friends not only expressed the hope, but they are confident that Mrs. Davids will live to pass the one hundredth milestone of her earthly voyage. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Sept 28, 1909, page 2.
