Considerable diphtheria is prevailing in Remsen, principally in the families of Henry and Wm. Sievers, Samuel Wentz and Chris Hentges. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, June 19, 1885, page 1
The diphtheria has become epidemic at Remsen, there being at least twenty cases there now. Two children were buried Friday from the families of Messrs. Wentz and Sievers, victims of this dread disease, and another child was laid away in the cemetery on Thursday. Everyone may not be aware of it, but diphtheria is one of the most dangerous diseases physicians have to contend with in their practice, and the mortality from it is greater than from any other of the common contagious diseases. We intend to create no alarm but it is well enough to know the facts and meet them squarely. The work of the storms the whole continent over is not as destructive as this one disease in any little community where it gets a foothold. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, June 23, 1885, page 1.
Note: Alma Wentz was the daughter of Samuel and Rosa Wentz and is buried in the Remsen City Cemetery.
