REMSEN. Special Correspondence. It becomes our painful duty this week, to chronicle the death of one of Meadow township’s foremost citizens, that of Gerd. David Moritz, which occurred March 4 at 2:30 a.m. at his farm residence. Mr. Moritz had been sick with inflammation of the kidneys for a little more than two weeks. Gerd. David Moritz was born on the 16 day of January, 1851 in the village of Marienhafen in Ost-Friesland, Europe. When 18 years old he came to the United States and resided in Woodfort county, Illionois until 1885, when he came to Plymouth county with his wife, nee Antke Marie Lutjens, whom he had married in 1875. Their union has been blessed with 11 children of whom ten survive with their mother, to mourn the loss of the kindest father and husband. Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity the A.O.U.W., Bankers Union of the World, the Sons of Herman, and the Knights of Pythias. The funeral was held Saturday March 7, under the auspicions of the A.O.U.W. the B.U.W. and the O.D.H.S. which appointed Peter Tjaden, Henry NIggeling, Math Lanners, A. Wersinger, Henry Sanny, and Martin NIssen as pall bearers. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, March 10, 1903, page 1.
