Mrs. Mary Maris died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Pierce, 1501
Eagle Street, last Sunday from infirmities of old age. She had not been well
for some time. The funeral will be held at the home of Mrs. Pierce at 1501
Eagle Street at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Mary Maris was Mary Sampson before her marriage. She was born in
Lincolnshire, England, July 16, 1836. She came with her parents to this
country at the age of 7. They were some of the earliest settlers of Iowa,
locating first in the Broken Kettle country west of here. Mary Sampson was
united in marriage with Robert Maris in the year 1856 at Sabula, Iowa.

Rev. Seward will have charge of the services. Mrs. Maris will be greatly
missed by her many friends.

Mary Maris was born in Lincolnshire, England, July 16, 1836, and passed away at, the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Pierce, 1501 Eagle street, this city, February 19, 1922, at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 3 days.

Mrs. Maris had been seriously ill for the past four months, death being due chiefly to old age and failing powers. Mr. and Mrs. Maris were early settlers in the Broken Kettle district and were widely known.

Mary Sampson, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. William Sampson, came to this country with her parents at the age of seven years. In the year of 1856 she was united in marriage with Robert Maris at Sabula, Iowa, and to this union seven children were born of which five are living, two having died, one in infancy, and the other at the age of 21 years. In 1899 Mr. Maris passed away and after his death Mrs. Maris made her home, with her children. The surviving children are Mrs. J. S. Pierce, Mrs. Wm. Deviney, Mrs. Geo. Hammett, of this city, John Maris, Wagner, S. D., Mrs. John Lindsay, of Lake Andes, S. D. She leaves to mourn besides her five children, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and a host of friends.

Mrs. Maris was a member, of the Methodist church and during her long life lived, up to the tenets of the church and was a good Christian woman.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon from the Pierce home, Rev. C. H. Seward officiating.
