Mrs. Christina Schut, 94, Oldest Remsen Resident, Dies Here.
Funeral services were held July 22 in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church for Mrs. Christina Schut, 94, thought to have been the oldest person in Remsen and surrounding area, who died in the Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars, Monday, July 20.
In excellent health save for slight indications of infirmity in recent years, Mrs. Schut, who made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schut, in Remsen, was up and about most of the time until a week before her passing.
The first of 11 children, she was born June 30, 1859, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and as a young woman came to this country and chose Remsen as a home.
In Le mars on March 11, 1886, she married John Schut, also a native of Germany, and the couple settled on a farm six miles north of Remsen.
After a short time they bought a farm in the same neighborhood and after many years were able to retire. They settled in Remsen in 1908 where Mr. Schut passed away on June 17, 1926.
Mrs. Schut, a staunch member of St. Paul’s congregation, was a member of the faith from her baptism in Germany.
Mrs. Schut was the mother of four children, two of them preceding her in death.
Surviving are her sons Herman, Remsen, and Henry of Comfrey, Minn. Those deceased are William and Mrs. Herbert (Nannie) Treppman. A brother, Chris Jessen of Denver, Colo., survives also. There are 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. – Le Mars Sentinel, Wednesday, July 29, 1953, page 8.
