HEART TROUBLE CAUSE. Carsten Witt, Long Time Resident, Died Saturday Morning
Remsen Bell-Enterprise: Carsten Witt, one of the prominent farmers of this community passed away at his home north of town last Saturday morning at ten o’clock, after a prolonged illness with heart disease. Mr. Witt suffered with the malady for seven years, although he was able to be about his work until about two weeks before his death, when he was suddenly taken down, and after that had been confined to his room. He passed away in the presence of his wife and children. His age was sixty-four years, four months and twenty-five days.
Carsten Witt was born on April 21, 1852, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Death took his parents while he was at an early age , and at the age of sixteen Carsten came to this county, settling at Davenport, Iowa. From there he went to Benton county, and in 1885 came to Remsen, where he resided for nine years, after which he went to a farm in Meadow township. In 1877 he was married to Miss Margaretha Haack. This union was blessed with six children of which two, a son of seven and a daughter of three preceded him in death. The remaining children are John, August, Adolph and Walter. Besides the widow and the four sons, he leaves a brother, Markus Witt, of Benton county, four grandchildren and many other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Witt lived in Meadow township for the past twenty-two years, bringing up an excellent family of children and through his fervent efforts and manly ways, won the esteem and respect of everyone with whom he came in contact.
The funeral services were held Tuesday morning. Services were conducted at the home at eleven o’clock and following this the services were conducted in St. Paul’s church. Rev. E. H. Eilers officiating. St. Paul’s choir under the direction of Mrs. E.H. Eilers, sang appropriate hymns. Interment was made in the Remsen cemetery.
Carston Witt for many years a resident of Remsen and its adjoining territory, was one of the leading farmers in this vicinity. He adhered strictly to the Christian teachings of his early days, and the result was the bringing up a large and highly respected family and winning of hosts of admirers and true friends. He was a man liked by everybody and his death is a distinct loss to the community. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of all. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Sept. 26, 1916, page 1.
