REMSEN, Iowa – Mildred S. Peterson, 89, of Remsen passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Happy Siesta in Remsen, surrounded by family and friends.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
The former Mildred Sophia Nielsen was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Fredonia Township, north of Oyens, Iowa, the daughter of Bonde and Laurentina (Kloster) Nielsen. When Mildred was only 2 years old, her mother passed away and she was raised by her grandparents, Thorvald and Sophia Kloster. She attended country school through the eighth grade. As a young woman, she lived and worked in California for five years.
Mildred married James J. Peterson of Sioux City on Dec. 19, 1941, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, rural Oyens. They farmed for 40 years in the Oyens and Remsen areas, retiring and moving into Oyens in 1981. Her husband, Jim, died on Jan. 28, 1996. In December 1998, she became a resident of Happy Siesta in Remsen.
Mildred was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Martha’s Circle and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Remsen. In her earlier years she was very active in school related activities with Remsen Public School. She was an avid bingo player, and loved playing pinochle with her family and friends. Her greatest love in life was her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children, Tom Peterson and his wife, Charlene of Le Mars, Gloria Treinen and her husband, Jerry of Remsen, and Carol Ritz and her husband, Phil of Remsen; grandchildren, Roger Treinen, Susan Van Dyke and her husband , Lynn, Mike Ritz and his wife Jill, Sarah Nelson and her husband, Adam, Jody Ritz and her friend, Steven Foss, Cody Peterson and his wife, Dawn and Cheryl Ritz; step-grandchildren, Jay Treinen, Jackie Kaufman and her husband, John, Joe Treinen, Jane Strunk and her husband, Keith and Jeff Treinen and his wife, Karla; seven great-grandchildren, Alex, Cody, Molly, Emily, Conner, Shonna and Abigail. 11 great-step-grandchildren, Eric, Katy, Keith, Sarah, Laura, J.J., Randy, Chris, Allison, Tim and Nicole; three great-great-step-grandchildren, Alex, Anna and Nicolette; a brother, Woodrow Petersen and his wife, Elsa of Chicago, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Jewel Nielsen of Paullina, Iowa; and two brothers-in-law, Norman Peterson of California, and Farley Peterson of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; a step-grandson, Jim Treinen; a great-grandson, Derek Peterson; a great-step grandson, Danny Treinen; and a brother Elmer Nielsen.
