From the LeMars Sentinel, February 11, 1941:

SAW FIRST HOUSE BUILT IN LEMARS

Dispatch from Huron, S. Dakota: Funeral services were held at the Congregational Church for Mrs. Sarah (sic--Sara) Small, 90, with burial at Eden Cemetery. Mrs. Small died last Thursday from a heart ailment and complications resulting from advanced age.

Mrs. Small was born at Schenectady, New York on August 9, 1850, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Reeves. She came west to Plymouth county, Iowa at the age of 19. She saw the first house erected on what is now the site of LeMars. There soon after she met Isaac S. Small and they were married on April 21, 1870. She came to Hudson in the fall of 1913 (error--1912) following the death of her husband that year and had resided here since.

She is survived by three sons, John of Exira, Iowa, Charles of Sioux City, William of Miami, Fla.; two daughters, Winifred of Golden City, MO and Mrs. Mattie Beadle of Hudson, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
