Ruth Mitchell

Mrs. William (Ruth Mitchell), 89, former longtime Akron resident, died Saturday (Feb. 14, 1987) at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Memorial services were held Feb. 20, in the Chapel on the Hill at Friendship Haven. The Reverends David Waterman and Chester Guien officiated. The body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 30, at 1 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist church in Akron. The Rev. Peter Peterson and Rev. Chester Guinn will officiate.

Mrs. Mitchell, the former Ruth Hayes, was born Oct. 24, 1897, at Faulton, S. D. to James Grant and Laura Bixler Hays. She had two older brothers, Dr. V. J. and J. R. Hayes. She moved to Akron with her parents in 1903.

She was a 1915 graduate of Akron high school and taught country school for one year. She took nurses training and graduated with a registered nurse degree in 1925 from West Suburban hospital school of nursing in Oak Park, Illinois.

She married William (Bill) Mitchell, an electrical contractor, August 15, 1927 in South Sioux City, Neb. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1977, Mr. Mitchell died in 1985.

Ruth pursued her nursing profession in various capacities. She also operated a general insurance business for 40 years. She and her husband traveled extensively in later years prior to taking up residence at Friendship Haven, a Methodist retirement home in Fort Dodge.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist church since 1911 and United Methodist Women serving in local district and conference positions: a charter member of P. E. O.; a member of Book and Thimble club for over 40 years serving as county chairman of the Federated Women;s club for four years and a treasurer of the club’s student loan fund and scholarship fund for 27 years and was a 25 year member of the Akron park board.

Memorials may be made to the Tompkins Memorial Health Center care fund at Friendship Haven, Fort Dodge, or Wesley United Methodist church in Akron.
