More than quarter million dollars to Gehlen schools here.

A rural Merrill woman has left an estate valued in excess of a quarter of a million dollars to Gehlen schools in LeMars.

The announcement was made today by James M. McNally, LeMars lawyher, executor of the estate of the late Lilly M. Mohan.

IN THE PROVISIONS, of Miss Mohan’s will filed July 5 in Plymouth county district court, Gehlen schools was named the principal and sole beneficiary of the residual estate, Mr. McNally said. He was appointed and qualified as the estate executor the same day.

Miss Mohan died June 20 this yhear, the last surviving member of the John T. and Delia Conness Mohan family.

She was preceded in death by three brothers. John T. Mohan Jr. died Oct. 28, 1965; Joseph Mohan, a longtime practicing dentist in Sioux City, died Jan. 19, 1932, and Walter Mohan died Aug. 21, 1942.

A PRELIMINARY inventory of the assets of the estate of Miss Mohan has been prepared by Mr. McNally, who has advised Gehlen Schools, Inc., it will be the beneficiary of of real estate, stocks, bonds and personal property with a value in excess of $225,000.

Mr. McNally emphasized this money will not be available to the school corporation at least during the period of administration of the estate which in this case will approximate one year.

A meeting of the board of directors of Gehlen Schools, Inc., has been held with Mr. McNally and the school corporation has authorized Burton Dull, LeMars lawyer , to appear in the estate as attorney for Gehlen Schools, Inc., and to assist in the administration of the estate.

MR. MCNALLY SAID the Mohan family for many years had been clients of James P. Kelley, formerly practicing attorney in LeMars and now a judge of the 21st judicial district, and that the present will of Miss Mohan was prepared and witnessed by Judge Kelley, prior to his duties on the bench.

Lilly M. Mohan was a graduate of St. Mary’s Notre Dame and State Teacher’s college at Cedar Falls. She also had advanced studies at Chicago university and other colleges.

FOR MANY years she was engaged in teaching in the Sioux City public school system.

Miss Mohan was particularly interested in the arts, the humanities and classics, especially foreign language. Her entire lifetime before retiring was spent teaching children in the Sioux City schools.

Her father, John T. Mohan, during his lifetime was a member of the board of directors of the LeMars public schools systems.

“Miss Mohan always emphasized that children should be given an opportunity to obtain a good education,” Mr. McNally said. “In her discussions concerning her estate, she always stressed that children should be considered first, and for this reason she devoted her entire lifetime planning and preparing for the eventual time when she could gratify her personal ambitions by making something available to children.”

MISS MOHAN WAS appreciative of the organization of Gehlen Schools, Inc., at the time of its organization, particularly when the outlying parishes, including her own Ellendale at Merrill, were taken into the corporation, Mr. McNally reported.

“Miss Mohan in her discussions visualized Gehlen schools, Inc., as an organization that would follow her wishes in educational matters and furnish a good education to the children of her faith,” her executor explained.

Mr. McNally pointed out that all of Miss Mohan’s brothers died without leaving any children and she was the last surviving Mohan of the immediate family.

The Mohan family was an early pioneer family in LeMars and former members of St. James parish, LeMars. Lilly M. Mohan and her brothers attended public school in LeMars.
