John E. HoltzJohn E. Holtz, who resided here for a time with his son-in-law and daughter, Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Ellison, died at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. G.C. Shook, at Ames, Okla, on Saturday, June 6, 1936, after a two week illness.Mr. Holtz was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on December 28, 1858, and as a boy came to Waterloo, Iowa, with his parents. On November 25, 1880, he was united in marrige to Roxie M. Dudley at Waterloo. After a brief residence in Wisconsin they moved to Newell, Iowa, where Mr. Holtz was a resident for 47 years. He was actively identified with the business life of Newell during that time, as blacksmith, city weighmaster and manager of the Newell Cement Tile Co. He served as town councilman and was a member of the Methodist Church. In later years he devoted considerable time to cabinet making, and in many homes in several states are pieces of furniture and other articles which will long witness to his skill with wood working tools. His wife died in 1926.
He is survived by his three children; Mrs. G. C. Shook of Ames, Okla., Mrs. W. E. Ellison of Hinton, and W. L. Holtz of Des Moines; one sister,
Mrs. Elizabeth Moore of Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.Funeral services were held at Ames, Okla, on Sunday, June 7, and at Newell, Ia, the following Tuesday where burial was made beside his wife. Mr. Holtz possessed the happy faculty of winning friends wherever he went, and will be remembered by many in Hinton and vicinity.
