DEATH of PIONEER RESIDENT.
Mrs. Marie Wheatley Had Lived Here Forty Eight Years.

Mrs. Marie Wheatley, one of the pioneer settlers of LeMars, died at her home, 615 Eagle street, where for the past thirty years she had conducted an apartment and rooming house, on Friday evening following a long illness due to cancer and heart trouble.

Mrs. Wheatley was 74 years of age having been born in Belgium in April, 1848. Her maiden name was Audrie. When a girl she came to America with her parents and was united in marriage with Clement Welter at Port Washington.

They came to LeMars in 1874 and she made her home here from that time until her death. Mr. Welter conducted a saloon in the early days of LeMars and he and his wife were well known to all the older residents, when the country was was sparsely settled and everybody knew his neighbor and distinctions or race, creed or occupation were not subjected to criticism, inspection or caviling.

Several children were born to their union, but all died in infancy with the exception of one son who lived to be seventeen years of age. Mr. Welter died in 1883 and Mrs. Welter took up the burden of life, and opened a rooming and boarding house to support herself and boy. In 1897 she was united in marriage with Charles Wheatley, from whom she was later divorced. He died a few years ago.

Mrs. Wheatley leaves one son, Eugene Wheatley, of this city. She also leaves a brother, Charles Audre, who at one time lived in LeMars and has frequently visited here. His present whereabouts is unknown. She also has a number of nephews and nieces living in Greeley county, Nebraska.

The funeral services were held yesterday morning at St. Joseph church. Rev. W. A. Pape, officiating.
