Tuesday, August 29, 1899Sudden Death of Mrs. Gergen.
Mrs. Mary Gergen, residing in Marion township, dropped dead very suddenly at her home last Sunday evening. Mrs. Gergen had been in the act of feeding one of her little grandchildren, which had been left motherless only a short time ago, and when found by her son was cold in death. Dr. Hines was called and pronounced the cause of death as heart failure.
The deceased was 57 years of age and had been a resident of Plymouth county for many years. About twenty years ago she was left a widow with six children — all boys — whom she has raised to manhood in such a way that they are all good citizens and a credit to their deceased mother. Mrs. Gergen was highly respected by all who knew her for many good traits of character. She had been in apparent good health up to the time of her death, except that she complained of some pain near the heart.
The funeral services will occur tomorrow at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph’s church.

LeMars Globe-Post
Wednesday, August 30, 1899SUDDEN DEATH.
Mrs. Mary Goergen, of Marion Township, Dies of Heart Disease.Mrs. Mary Goergen, of Marion township, was found dead by her sons on Sunday evening where Mrs. Goergen had gone to care for her little grand child left motherless but a few weeks and she was in the act of feeding the little one when she was stricken with heart disease.
Dr. Hines was hastily summoned to the house but the mother was beyond human aid when he reached there. Her death following so shortly after her daughter (sic daughter-in-law) is so particularly sad and the bereaved sons have the deepest sympathy of neighbors and friends in their double bereavement.
The funeral was held at St. Joseph’s church on Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock and the remains were followed to the church by a large concourse of friends and neighbors. The remains were laid to rest beside those of the husband.
Mrs. Goergen was left a widow about eighteen years ago but met her bereavement courageously and immediately took up the burden of caring for the children, six in number, and raised them to man’s estate in a manner that caused them to be respected by all who knew them.
Mrs. Goergen was fifty-seven years of age and has always appeared to enjoy good health, though lately she had spoken of having a pain in her heart that distressed her.
