Mrs. Sophia Lieb Taken By Death.
Was Resident of LeMars for 20 Years.

Committal services will he held this morning at St. Joseph church for Mrs. Louis J. Lieb, well known former resident of LeMars.

Mrs. Sophia Lieb died Tuesday, July 30, 1940 at her home in Fonda after an illness of two months.

Sophia Speilman was born October 22, 1862, Dyersville, Iowa. She went to Pocahontas county with her parents when a girl and the family homesteaded on a farm east of Fonda where she grew up.

On March 2, 1886, she was united in marriage to Louis J. Lieb. They then moved to a farm near Pocahontas where they resided until 1901 when they moved to a farm near LeMars. They resided at LeMars until the death of Mr. Lieb on March 16, 1918. In the spring of 1920, Mrs. Lieb moved back to Fonda where she resided for several years. She lived at Ames and Des Moines for a few years and then moved back to Fonda where she has since resided.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lieb. One son died in infancy; one son, Vincent died on September 11, 1919. The surviving children are: Adel Lieb of Pocahontas; Mae, Mrs. John J. Smid of Breda; Louis Lieb, of El Monte, Calif.; Mrs. Florence Owens of Hawthorne, Calif.; Fred Lieb, of Lodi, Calif.; Clarence Lieb, of Houston, Texas; Dorothy, Mrs. J. A. Owens, of Honolulu, T.H. She also leaves 24 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Besides her children, Mrs. Lieb is survived by one brother, Fred Speilman of Fonda; three sisters: Mrs. Dora Gottfried of Pocahontas; Mrs. Wm. Wykoff of Fonda; Mrs. Lulu Thompson, of Ames; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mae Speilman of Fonda.

The deceased was a member of Our Lady of Good Council church in Fonda and of the Christian Mothers’ society. She was a member of the American Legion auxiliaary of the Fonda post.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 8 o’clock at Our Lady of Good Council church in Fonday with Rev. Murphy officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s cemetery in LeMars.
