Mrs. Susan E. Galles Ostert was born at Dommeldinger, Luxembourg, 71 years, 4 months and 1 day ago. She came to America in the year 1869, at the age of 15 years, and arrived at Belvein, Jackson county, Ia. She was married to Vale Ostert on February 27, 1871. The young couple moved to a farm in Springbrook, Jackson county and later, in 1878, they moved to Plymouth county and located in LeMars. Subsequently they operated a hotel at Leeds and still later at Remsen.

But Mr. and Mrs. Ostert preferred the land, and so they engaged in farming at Remsen, Oyens, and finally at LeMars. Nine years ago Mr. Valentine Ostert died at LeMars. His body lies in St. Joseph’s cemetery in LeMars.

Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ostert and five are left to mourn the death of their mother. They are: Mrs. John Traufler, LeMars; Mrs. Math Koob, Remsen; Mrs. Wyatt Phelan, LeMars; John and Leo Ostert, of LeMars. Four children died in infancy in the years of 1882 and 1883, the victims of scarlet fever and diphtheria epidemics. Mrs. Ostert has been making her home with Mrs. John Traufler in LeMars.

The deceased also leaves two sisters and four brothers, John G. Galles, of LeMars; Peter Galles of Granville; John W. Galles, of Remsen; Mrs. Peter Arens, of Remsen; Mrs Henry Masuen, of LeMars; Joe Galles, of Remsen. There are 24 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
