John B. Greenen, a Pioneer Resident, Dies After a Week’s Illness From Bronchial Trouble Supplemented by Infirmities of Old Age.

John B. Greenen, a well known pioneer resident of Le Mars, died at his home on the corner of Madison and Sixth streets on Wednesday afternoon following a week’s severe illness caused by bronchial trouble. He had been ailing for sometime prior to that and the infirmities of age militated against his recovery.

Mr. Greenen was a native of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Europe, and was born at Hifflinger October 27, 1838, and had attained the age of 76 years. In 1867 he came to America and shortly afterwards located at Aurora, Ill. At that place, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Weber on April 25, 1871, who has been his constant companion and faithful wife for 43 years of happy wedded life. Mr. and Mrs. Greenen lived in Aurora for some time after their marriage and subsequently at Streater, Ill. In 1888 they came to Plymouth county and for a few years farmed in Fredonia township and then came to Le Mars were Mr. Greenen engaged in business and this has been their home since, with the exception of some years spent at Boulder, Colo.

To Mr. and Mrs. Greenen eight children were born, four of whom with the mother mourn the loss of a good husband and father. Three sons died young and one daughter about 10 years ago. The daughters are: Miss Rose Greenen, a high school teacher at Brush, Colo., Miss Lena Greenen, who teaches in the high school at LaJunta, Colo., Sister Servatus, at the Convented of the Immaculate Conception at Dubuque, and Miss Marie Greenen at home.

Mr. Greenen was well known, especially to the older generation in Le Mars and was highly respected. He was a loving husband and father. He worked hard, and one of his main objects was to afford a good education for his family and give them every educational opportunity and in this he succeeded.

The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. F. X. Feuerstein officiating.
