Well Known Citizen Passes Away At His Home In This City

Came Here As A Boy

Parents Were Among First Settlers in Johnson Township

John E. Arendt, a resident of Plymouth county and Le Mars since early boyhood, died at his home in this city, 500 First Ave. S.W., about 8 o’clock Wednesday morning. Death was due to cerebral Hemorrhage, caused by a fall. Mr. Arendt had been subject to sudden attacks of illness the past few years, and Monday evening, while in the basement, where he had gone to fire up the furnace, suffered a seizure. Medical attendance was summoned at once. He was able to walk up stairs with assistance, but next day his condition became rapidly worse and he passed away Wednesday morning.

John E. Arendt was a native of Iowa, and was born near Tete des Mortes, on September 20, 1860. With his parents, John and Elizabeth Arendt, he came to Plymouth county from Dubuque county in 1868.

Early Settlers Here

His parents were among the first settlers in Johnson township, where they located on a farm. John attended country school and helped in the farm work. When a youth in his teens, he left the farm and began clerking for the firm of Burg and Hentges in Le Mars. Subsequently he engaged in business on his own account in Le Mars for several years. On disposing of his business he became a traveling salesman and for many years represented large mercantile Chicago and St. Louis houses.

He was successful in his avocation and his ability and integrity were recognized by all his associates and competitors.

Mr. Arendt was married to Miss Mary Leonard was widely known and had formed many friendships during his long residence here. He was active in public and community affairs in his earlier life and took a deep interest in politics, national and state. He was an ardent democrat, and a strong supporter of the party. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Arendt was genial and pleasant and had a pleasant word for everybody he met, and will be missed by many who have known him all their lives.

The funeral services will be held this morning at 10 o’clock at St. James church, Rev. Father L. J. Cooper, the pastor, officiating. Pall bearers will be J. A. Hoffman, Frank C. Hentges, D. C. Lenihan, Frank Burg, Pete Thoma, Will Schafer.

Interment will be made in the St. Joseph’s cemetery, where his parents are buried.

Mrs. Edith Klinkerfues, of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Fred Stearns, of Waterloo, came to attend the last rights. Mrs. Neil Arendt, of Sioux Fall, S. D., his sister-in-law, was prevented at the lat minute from coming by illness.
