Herb M. Sammis Joins Majority

Was Well Known In Business And Social Circles Here For Years

Friends in Le Mars have received word of the death of Herbert Mortimer Sammis, which occurred at his residence (unreadable few words) at the age of 71 years. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Lowden Sammis, of Seattle, and George L. Sammis, of Portland, Oregon. Funeral services were held February 2 and the remains cremated.

H. M. Sammis was for many years a resident of Le Mars, before going to the state of Washington to live. He came with his brother, George Sammis from Oregon, Illinois, in the early eighties to Le Mars and they were engaged in the grocery business for a number of years. George Sammis was later county auditor. “Herb” Sammis, as he was universally called in Le Mars, later traveled on the road for wholesale houses and was widely known among the traveling fraternity. While a resident of Le Mars, he was married to Miss Alice Lowden, of Iowa Falls, a sister of Frank Lowden, ex-governor of Illinois and a nationally prominent politician. Miss Lowden taught in the Le Mars city schools for a number of years and was a very popular and well loved teacher.

Herb Sammis, while a resident of Le Mars, was actively interested in all community affairs. He was an ardent politician and booster for the republican party and took part in many local campaigns and was party nominee for the office of sheriff at one time. He was also interested in good horses and racing, baseball and other sports and contributed his time and money to these as well as to other legitimate enterprises
