Kathleen “Kathy” Sitzmann, 69, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 26, 2022, at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Sunnybrook Community Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Pastor Jan King will officiate. Interment will be at a later date at Reshaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2022, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be to Sunnybrook Community Church or to Kathy’s family.

Kathleen Kay Kowalke, the daughter of Herman “Junior” and Beverly (Smith) Kowalke, was born October 19, 1953 in Le Mars, Iowa. She grew up in Union Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa. She attended Union School and later high school in Le Mars. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1972.

Following high school, she attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Following college, she went to work as a secretary in Sioux City.

She was united in marriage to Steve Sitzmann on October 9, 1976 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Early on, Kathy stayed home to raise her children. In 1993, she went to work for Wells Dairy in Le Mars. She worked in customer service until her retirement in 2015. She worked parttime for Joba’s in Le Mars until she was diagnosed with cancer.

Kathy was very active in the Le Mars community. She was a member of T.T.T., assisted with the Mainstreet Le Mars program and the Plymouth Alzheimer’s Association for several years. She had been attending Sunnybrook Community Church in Sioux City. Kathy loved spending time with her friends. She and Steve enjoyed traveling, especially to Florida to see family. The last several years, Kathy enjoyed making lunch for her grandchildren and their friends during the school year. Her family was her greatest joy! Her schedule always revolved around the activities of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Steve of Le Mars; a son: Adam (Carol) Sitzmann of Palm Harbor, FL, and their family: Kyle, and Claudia (fiancé Brandon) and their children, Adalyn and Dominik; a son: Travis (LeAnn) Sitzmann of Le Mars, IA, and their children: Ava, Jefferson, and Matthew; a daughter: Tina (Tyler) Huls of Le Mars, IA, and their children: Carter and Madison; a son: Tyler Sitzmann (Jena Lenz) of Le Mars, IA, and his children: Hayden and Mason, and Jena’s daughter, Bella; a niece: Amyann (Mike) Schindhelm of Wisconsin, and their children: Tristan and Jenslee; and several brothers and sisters in law, aunts, and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Junior and Beverly Kowalke; and her brother, Steve Kowalke in 1986.
