Gerald Sitzmann, 82, of Le Mars, formerly of rural Hinton, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at his home in Le Mars.

Gerald Joseph Sitzmann was born Nov. 25, 1936, in Plymouth County, the son of Raymond and Leona (Nuebel) Sitzmann. He attended Remsen Union School and later Gehlen Catholic. He quit school in 1956 after his father passed away and spent the next eight years helping his mother on the farm to support his eight siblings.

He was united in marriage to Dolores Kommes on Sept. 1, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. They farmed in the Neptune area east of Hinton. In March 2018, they moved to Le Mars. Dolores died Feb. 17, 2019.

He was lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – Neptune until it closed. He then became a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. He was also a member of Holy Name Society of St. Joseph – Neptune and the Knights of Columbus in Le Mars.

Gerald enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include five children: Duane (Kaye) Sitzmann of Sioux Center, Ray (Shelly) Sitzmann of Le Mars, John Sitzmann of Fort Dodge, Blaine (Wendi) Sitzmann of Clermont, Florida, and Brenda (Brian) Kolbeck of Le Mars; 14 grandchildren: Haley Sitzmann and her fiancé Ross Rozeboom, Mandy Sitzmann, Colin and his wife, Risa Sitzmann, Devin, Linden, and Lauren Sitzmann, Tristan and Payton Sitzmann, Landon and Winston Sitzmann, Josie, Alyssa, Nathan, and Breanna Kolbeck; 4 brothers: Cletus (Sharon) Sitzmann of Kingsley, Fred (Susie) Sitzmann of Rochester, Minnesota, Steve (Kathy) Sitzmann of Le Mars, and Kevin (JoAnn) Sitzmann of Le Mars; three sisters: Jeannette (Mark) Schroeder of Le Mars, Mary Ann (Don) Krogman of Le Mars, and Kathleen (Bob) Shaw of Spirit Lake; his in-laws: Jolynn Sitzmann of Le Mars, Ken Kommes of Fort Dodge, Rich (Marlys) Kommes of Le Mars, Mary (Bill) Langley of Sioux City, Loretta (Lee) Steichen of Alton, Lavonne (Pete) Galles of Remsen, and LaVonne Kommes of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Leona Sitzmann; his wife, Dolores Sitzmann; his son: Joseph Sitzmann; his grandson: Blake Sitzmann; a brother: Leon Sitzmann; and his in-laws: Barb Sitzmann, Don Kommes, Larry Kommes, Florence (Daniel “Butch”) Thiel, Leonard (Betty) Kommes, and Erlene Kommes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Bruce Lawler will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery – Neptune, rural Hinton. Visitation with the family present will be after 5 p.m., today (Monday), at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. There will be a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Gehlen Catholic School.
