Dolores Sitzmann, 78, of Le Mars, formerly of rural Hinton, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Dolores Oliva Kommes was born Aug. 4, 1940, on a farm near Oyens, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Luken) Kommes. She attended grade school at St. Catherine’s in Oyens. She attended high school in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She went to nursing school in Sioux City and received her RN degreefrom St. Vincent School of Nursing in Sioux City. Dolores began working as an RN for Sacred Heart Hospital and later for Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. She retired from Floyd Valley Hospital in 2005, after 44 years in nursing.
She was united in marriage to Gerald Sitzmann on Sept. 1, 1962, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. They made their home on a farm east of Hinton. In March of 2018, they moved to Le Mars.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church – Neptune, before becoming a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars, where she was active in the Prayer Chain. She was a longtime member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
She also helped with “Reach for Recovery” at Floyd Valley Healthcare and volunteered in the Auxiliary Gift Shop, where she made tea towels for many years.
Through the years, she enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, and reading.
But most of all, she loved the times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed babysitting them and attending many of their activities.
Survivors include her husband of over 56 years, Gerald of Le Mars; five children: Duane (Kaye) Sitzmann of Sioux Center, Ray (Shelly) Sitzmann of Le Mars, John Sitzmann of Fort Dodge, Blaine (Wendi) Sitzmann of Clermont, Florida, and Brenda (Brian) Kolbeck of Le Mars; 14 grandchildren: Haley Sitzmann and her fiancé, Ross Rozeboom, Mandy Sitzmann, Colin and his wife Risa Sitzmann, Devin, Linden, and Lauren Sitzmann, Tristan and Payton Sitzmann, Landon and Winston Sitzmann, Josie, Alyssa, Nathan, and Breanna Kolbeck; two brothers: Ken Kommes of Fort Dodge, and Rich (Marlis) Kommes of Le Mars; three sisters: Mary (Bill) Langley of Sioux City, Loretta (Lee) Steichen of Alton, and Lavonne (Pete) Galles of Remsen; her in-laws: LaVonne Kommes of Le Mars, Jeanette (Mark) Schroeder of Le Mars, Cletus (Sharon) Sitzmann of Kingsley, Mary Ann (Don) Krogman of Le Mars, Kathleen (Bob) Shaw of Spirit Lake, Fred (Susie) Sitzmann of Rochester, Minnesota, Steve (Kathy) Sitzmann of Le Mars, Kevin (JoAnn) Sitzmann of Le Mars, and Jolynn Sitzmann of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son: Joseph Sitzmann; her siblings: Don Kommes, Larry Kommes, Florence (Daniel “Butch”) Thiel, and Leonard (Betty) Kommes; and in-laws: Leon Sitzmann and Barb Sitzmann.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Matthew Solyntjes will celebrate Mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery – Neptune, rural Hinton. Visitation with the family present will be after 3 p.m., Thursday, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. There will be a Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary at 5 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church.
Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may made to Gehlen Catholic School and/or Floyd Valley Healthcare.
