Bernard "Ben" Freking, 85, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Monday, May 6, 1996, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars after being stricken by an apparent heart attack at his home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1911, at Le Mars to Caspar and Anna (Deters) Freking. The Le Mars native and lifelong area farmer grew up near Le Mars and attended a rural school and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars.

He married Helen Feller on Jan. 23, 1939, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed south of Oyens for most of their married life. She died on Oct. 27, 1979, Mr. Freking moved into town and retired from farming. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council No. 1466 and the Oyens Columbus Club.

Survivors include two brothers, Gregg Freking and Leo Freking and his wife, Therese, all of Le Mars; two sisters, Caroline Freking of Le Mars and Agnes Waldschmitt and her husband, Ray, of Remsen; and two brothers-in-law, Leo Haverkamp of Fort Dodge and Lyle Bohnenkamp of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elmer (Mary) Willenberg and Mrs. Joe (Mary) Freking, all of Remsen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Joseph H. Freking; and two sisters, Mary Haverkamp and Frances Bohnenkamp.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Jerry Cosgrove will officiate, with burial at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Oyens. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. Wednesday. A scriptural wake service is set for 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. at the Feuerstein Funeral in Le Mars.

Memorials may be directed to Gehlen Catholic School.
