MRS. JOHN SCHMIDT CALLED BY DEATH LAST FRIDAY
Rites Held Sunday For Esteemed Portland Township Woman

Mrs. John Schmidt, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of Portland township, passed away at her home, about nine miles northeast of Akron, on Friday, August 16, 1940, at 4:30 a. m., at the age of 72 years, 2 months, and 16 days. She had been ailing at different times before, but her final illness began in January of this year.

Mathilda Wilhelmine Schmidt (nee Wurl) was born in Buffalo, New York, May 31, 1868, where she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. On January 23, 1806, she was joined in holy wedlock with Mr. John Schmidt at Springfield, Illinois, where. they lived for two years and then came to the farm, northeast of Akron in Portland township, Plymouth County, Iowa, which has since remained the family home. In this community, where she had lived for more than forty years, she had gained through her helpful and kind ways a wide circle of firm friends who will greatly miss her genial presence. Her husband preceded her in death in 1923, and her departure is now mourned by three sons and five daughters, Wm. and John Schmidt, of Le Mars; Elmer Schmidt, Mrs. Hilda Andresen, Mrs. Mina Rounds, Mrs. Tillie Erks and Mrs. Ella Frerichs, of Akron; Mrs. Emma Molzen, of Le Mars; also, one brother, who resides in Illinois; two step-daughters, 16 grandchildren, two step-brothers, one step-sister, and other relatives. The community offers its sincere sympathy in their bereavement.

There was a large attendance at the funeral services Sunday afternoon in Trinity Lutheran Church, Akron, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fred (can read this line) Schmidt, John Schmidt, Fred Schmidt, John Hillrichs, and Henry Hillrichs: Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

Relatives from a distance were: Mrs. Lena Kallsen of Bryant, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. John Wubben of Emden, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Carl Engel, and Mrs. Gust Engel of Pomeroy, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Engel and Mrs. Lena Ackerman, of Athens, 111.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Callaghan and son, of Sioux City.
