Bernard Evan Kots was born on April 13, 1931 in Maurice, Iowa to John and Gertrude (Bolluyt) Kots. He was raised in rural Maurice and attended school in Maurice. He graduated from Maurice High School in 1948 and in 1952 he enlisted in the United States Army. Bud was stationed in Korea where he fought on the front lines and helped to build a school; he was honorably discharged in 1954. He then went on to attend Morningside College in Sioux CIty and receive a Bachelor’s Degree in business. Bud worked a variety of jobs in Sioux City including Swift Packing Plant and Standard Oil.

Bud was united in marriage to Joann Angela Marshall on August 12, 1966 in Canton, SD. They made their home on their farm in rural Akron. For many years, Bud and Joann farmed; they raised a variety of crops and cared for a variety of livestock including: dairy cattle, sheep, hogs, chicken, and geese. Bud later worked as a truck driver; first driving a feed truck, working for CCX driving freightliners, then working for Mike’s in Akron, and also enjoyed driving a school bus for the Akron-Westfield School District. He retired at the age of 82.

He was one of founding members at Rejoice Community Church in Le Mars where he served in many capacities. Previously, he had been a member at Community Reformed Church in Hawarden. Bud enjoyed being able to preach and would fill in as needed for local churches. He performed several weddings, including those of his own children, and loved to visit nursing home residents.

He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his famous annual Christmas letter! Bud always loved to read the newspaper and was a huge Minnesota Twins fan. Bud and Joann would often go to games and loved to travel to different MLB stadiums! He was selfless and could always be counted on for good advice or help whenever it was needed.
