Death Claims Mrs. Mary Lehnertz

Former Well Known Remsen Woman Passes Away at Muenster, Texas

Word was received by relatives here late Sunday of the death of Mrs. Mary Lehnertz at her home in Muenster, Tex. Mrs. Lehnertz, a former Remsen resident, died Sunday evening at the age of 98 years. She was the mother of Mrs. J. T. Wictor and Mrs. Jos. N. Treinen of Remsen.

Mrs. Lehnertz suffered a paralytic stroke three years ago and was disabled ever since, with periodical bed confinement. Until last November she shared the home with her son John, who ministered to her during her long illness, but who passed away in November. Since then she had the assistance, alternately, of her son Joe and wife who farm near Muenster and a daughter, Martha, now Mrs. Bert. Fisch, of Fort Worth.
Mrs. Lehnertz, nee Arens, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth [Ehleringer] Arens and was born in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, August 6, 1852. As a child she came to this country with her parents, the family settling at St. Donatus in eastern Iowa. There, she married Michael Lehnertz. A year later the couple came to Cherokee county, settling on a farm near the present Maryhill, southeast of Cherokee. They moved to Shelby county and spent a few years there, returning to this community and east of Remsen. They moved to Texas in 1901, occupying a farm near, Muenster, later retiring. Mr. Lehnertz died there In 1917.
There were seven children. Two children died in infancy and John at the age of 69 last November. The living children are Mrs. Treinen and Mrs. Wictor, Remsen; Frank Lehnertz, Adams, Minn.; Tony Lehnertz, Mitchell, S. D.; Joseph, Muenster, and Mrs. Bert Fisch, Fort Worth.
The Arens family is well remembered by older residents of Remsen, all having resided here and taken their due part in the development of the community. There were eight children, all of whom have passed with, the exception of Mrs. Nicholas Kass, now, of Los Angeles. Those who have passed away are Mrs. Peter Homan, Mrs. J. P. Mersch, Mrs. John Duster and Anton, Nicholas and Frank Arens.
