Funeral Monday in LeMars
Carl W. Ahrendt, 72, of LeMars, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 31, 1994, at his home.

Carl William Ahrendt was born Sept. 5, 1921, at Hiawatha, Kan., the son of Carl and Elizabeth (Westhoff) Ahrendt. As a child he moved with his family to Plymouth County, Iowa. He was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Grant Township, and educated in rural Plymouth County schools.

Mr. Ahrendt served his county in the United States Air Force from July 1942 to September 1945. He was stationed in England during World War II and was an airplane crew chief mechanic. On Oct. 8, 1943, he married Betty Downing in LeMars. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October 1993.

He worked for Plymouth County for 16 years as supervisor and heavy equipment mechanic, retiring in 1988. Carl and Betty also helped their son, Steven, raise their granddaughter, Jessica Ahrendt, after her mother died.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist church and Wasmer Post 241, American Legion, of LeMars.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two sons, Richard Ahrendt and his wife Cathy of Tuscon, Ariz., and Steven Ahrendt of LeMars; two daughters, Linda Goltry and her husband Jim of Newport News, Va., and Ruth Sick and her husband Dave of Onawa; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; three sisters, Louise Kruse and Ida Petersen of LeMars, and Bertha Waldum of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Binneboese and Sophie Zieger; and an infant brother.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, LeMars, with the Rev. David Higdon officiating. Burial will be at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, rural LeMars, with military honors provided by the Wasmer Post 241, American Legion, of LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Dave Higdon officiating. Burial with full military honors by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.
